What Is GIA?
GIA stands for the Gemological Institute of America, an independent non-profit organisation established in 1931. For over nine decades, GIA has been recognised globally for providing gemological research, education and laboratory services.
GIA developed the internationally recognised 4Cs framework—Carat Weight, Colour, Clarity and Cut—which is now the universal standard used to describe diamond quality. This system provides a consistent language that jewellers, gemologists and customers worldwide use when evaluating and comparing diamonds.
Does GIA Certify Diamonds?
It's important to understand that GIA does not describe its documents as diamond certificates, nor does it certify or appraise diamonds. The correct term is GIA grading report or GIA laboratory report.
A GIA report records the results of an independent gemological examination. It provides detailed information about a diamond's characteristics and quality based on objective assessment, but it is not a monetary valuation or guarantee. The report describes what the diamond is, not what it's worth.
Understanding the Diamond 4Cs
The 4Cs provide a framework for understanding diamond quality. Each factor plays a distinct role in a diamond's appearance and value.
Carat Weight
Carat measures a diamond's weight, not simply its physical dimensions. One carat equals 200 milligrams. It's important to understand that two diamonds of equal carat weight can appear different in size depending on their proportions and shape. A well-cut diamond may appear larger than a poorly proportioned stone of the same weight.
Colour
For natural colourless to light yellow or brown diamonds, GIA uses a colour scale ranging from D to Z. Grade D represents the least apparent colour—essentially colourless—whilst progressively more colour becomes visible as you move towards Z.
The differences between adjacent colour grades can be extremely subtle and are typically assessed under controlled lighting conditions by trained gemologists. Many of these distinctions are invisible to the untrained eye, particularly once a diamond is set in jewellery.
Clarity
Clarity assesses internal characteristics known as inclusions and external characteristics known as blemishes. GIA evaluates clarity under controlled conditions using 10× magnification.
The GIA clarity scale includes the following grades, listed from highest to lowest:
- Flawless (FL): No inclusions or blemishes visible under 10× magnification
- Internally Flawless (IF): No inclusions visible under 10× magnification; only insignificant surface blemishes
- Very Very Slightly Included (VVS1 and VVS2): Inclusions are extremely difficult for a skilled grader to see under 10× magnification
- Very Slightly Included (VS1 and VS2): Inclusions are minor and range from difficult to somewhat easy to see under 10× magnification
- Slightly Included (SI1 and SI2): Inclusions are noticeable under 10× magnification
- Included (I1, I2 and I3): Inclusions are obvious under 10× magnification and may affect transparency and brilliance
Many clarity characteristics are not visible to the naked eye, particularly in higher clarity grades. The impact on a diamond's appearance depends on the size, number, position and nature of the inclusions.
Cut
Cut describes how effectively a diamond's proportions, symmetry, polish and facet arrangement interact with light. A well-cut diamond will exhibit brilliance, fire and scintillation—the qualities that make a diamond sparkle.
GIA's cut grades for standard round brilliant diamonds are:
- Excellent
- Very Good
- Good
- Fair
- Poor
Important note: GIA's official overall cut grade currently applies to standard round brilliant diamonds only. Fancy-shaped diamonds—such as oval, pear, emerald, marquise and cushion shapes—do not receive the same overall GIA cut grade. However, their polish, symmetry, proportions and other characteristics can still be assessed and recorded on the grading report.
What Information Is on a GIA Diamond Grading Report?
Depending on the report type, a GIA diamond grading report may include the following information:
- GIA report number
- Diamond shape and cutting style
- Measurements (length, width and depth in millimetres)
- Carat weight
- Colour grade
- Clarity grade
- Cut grade (where applicable)
- Polish
- Symmetry
- Fluorescence
- Proportions (table percentage, depth percentage, crown and pavilion angles)
- Clarity characteristics (type and position of inclusions and blemishes)
- Comments or treatment information
- Report issue date
- Laser inscription information (where applicable)
Some full GIA Diamond Grading Reports include a plotted clarity diagram showing the position and type of inclusions and blemishes. This diagram provides a visual map of the diamond's internal and external characteristics.
What Does Diamond Fluorescence Mean?
Fluorescence describes how a diamond may react when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light. Some diamonds emit a visible glow—most commonly blue—whilst others show no reaction at all.
GIA reports fluorescence using the following descriptions:
- None
- Faint
- Medium
- Strong
- Very Strong
Fluorescence is neither automatically good nor bad. Its visual effect can vary between diamonds. In some cases, fluorescence may improve the appearance of a diamond with a lower colour grade by making it appear whiter. In other cases, strong fluorescence may cause a diamond to appear hazy or milky, though this is relatively uncommon.
Polish and Symmetry
Polish refers to the quality of a diamond's finished facet surfaces. It assesses the smoothness and condition of the diamond's exterior after cutting and polishing.
Symmetry relates to the precision and alignment of a diamond's facets and overall shape. It evaluates how well the facets align with one another and how symmetrical the diamond's outline appears.
Both polish and symmetry are graded separately from the overall cut grade and are recorded on the GIA report. Grades for polish and symmetry typically range from Excellent to Poor.
What Is a GIA Report Number?
Each GIA report has a unique report number, which serves as a permanent record in GIA's database. This number allows you to verify the information on a physical or digital report against GIA's records.
Where applicable, the GIA report number may also be laser-inscribed on the diamond's girdle—the narrow band around the diamond's widest point. This microscopic inscription is invisible to the naked eye but can be viewed under magnification. Not every diamond or report type includes a laser inscription, particularly older reports.

Customers can independently verify a GIA report by using the official GIA Report Check service. Simply enter the GIA report number on GIA's website, and you can compare the information with GIA's database.
