What is Moonstone?

Moonstone vs Rainbow Moonstone

Despite the similar name, rainbow moonstone is not the same as traditional moonstone. Material sold as rainbow moonstone is generally a variety of labradorite, a related feldspar mineral that displays a colourful play of light known as labradorescence.

Rainbow moonstone typically shows flashes of blue, green, yellow and other colours across a translucent or white body. Whilst it shares the feldspar family with moonstone and can be equally beautiful, it is mineralogically distinct from the orthoclase or albite feldspar that produces classic moonstone adularescence.

Both stones are valued in jewellery, but it is helpful to understand the difference when selecting a piece or discussing moonstone properties.

Caring for Moonstone Jewellery

Moonstone requires gentle care to maintain its appearance. Clean moonstone jewellery with warm soapy water and a soft cloth or brush. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a lint-free cloth.
